It typically takes about 1 million to 10 million algae cells to be visible to the naked eye. Algae are simple, photosynthetic organisms that can grow rapidly in pools, appearing as green, yellow, or black patches. They thrive in warm, nutrient-rich water with poor circulation or imbalanced chemistry, making the pool unsightly and potentially unsafe for swimming

From Green to Clean

A green pool can look like a lost cause, but in most cases it can be brought back. Our green-to-clean service clears the debris, kills the algae and rebalances the water so your pool is safe and ready to swim again.
What causes a green pool
Chlorine or water chemistry falling out of balance
Pumps, filters or salt systems that aren’t running right
Heavy debris, like spring pollen and falling leaves
Wildfire smoke season, when extra organic material in the air throws off water chemistry
A pool left uncovered or unattended for a few weeks
How green to clean works
Remove leaves and debris from the pool
Brush the walls and floor to break up algae
Vacuum the pool
Test the water and treat it to kill the algae and rebalance the chemistry
Empty the skimmer and pump baskets and check the filter, cleaning it as the algae clears
Check the pump, filter and other equipment so the problem doesn’t come right back
How long it takes depends on the pool’s size and how far the algae has gone. We’ll tell you what to expect after we see it.
Keep it clean afterward
Many of our green-to-clean customers stay on with regular maintenance once the pool is clear. Weekly service includes testing and balancing chemistry, brushing, skimming, vacuuming, checking the equipment and filter, and emptying the baskets, which keeps the algae from coming back.
Equipment problems behind the green
If a broken pump, clogged filter or failing salt cell caused the problem, we can fix that too. We repair pumps, filters, heaters, salt systems, chlorinators and automation on Hayward, Pentair, Jandy and Waterway equipment.
